Although their intricate forms might resemble underwater blooms, corals are actually colonies of marine invertebrates. Each of these tiny animals is called a polyp, and together, they create vibrant coral reefs. Polyps bond via calcium carbonate, resulting in robust, interconnected colonies. Over time, these colonies merge to form some of the ocean’s most spectacular ecosystems—coral reefs.

Corals are part of the Cnidaria family, closely related to jellyfish and sea anemones. Cnidarians are distinguished by their tentacles, a single opening serving as both mouth and stomach, and their unique feeding habits. Corals primarily consume zooplankton, capturing it with their tentacles before digesting it. Most coral species also maintain a symbiotic alliance with microscopic algae called zooxanthellae, which use sunlight to provide additional energy through photosynthesis.

Corals in tropical waters are generally classified as either hard or soft corals. Hard corals are the architects of the reef, constructing limestone skeletons that build up over centuries to create vast underwater structures. Notable types include brain corals, staghorn corals, and branching corals. Soft corals, on the other hand, are more flexible and lack the rigid calcium carbonate skeleton. Their branch-like cores give them a graceful, swaying appearance. Unlike hard corals, some soft corals do not contain zooxanthellae and instead feed on drifting phytoplankton. Examples include sea fans, devil’s hand, and colt corals.

Coral reefs dazzle with shades from gold and green to vibrant pink, blue, and orange, making them among the planet’s most visually stunning wonders. But how do corals acquire such striking colors? The polyps themselves are usually translucent, and their calcium carbonate skeletons are white. The secret lies in the zooxanthellae algae living within the polyps—these algae contain chlorophyll, lending brown and green tones. Corals that produce additional protein pigments can display reds, violets, blues, and other brilliant shades. Both the depth of the water and the available light spectrum influence coral coloration, which also acts as a form of natural UV protection for the algae. Healthy, richly colored corals are generally a sign of a thriving ecosystem.

Despite covering less than 1% of Earth’s surface, coral reefs shelter about 25% of all marine species—over a million different organisms. These reefs serve as vital storm barriers for coastal communities, help prevent shoreline erosion, and sustain the livelihoods of more than half a billion people globally through fisheries and tourism.

These sheltered spots are frequented by resting nurse sharks, and eagle rays are often seen gliding through the currents. Scorpionfish expertly camouflage against the coral backdrop, while swarms of yellow snappers and fusiliers create a moving mosaic of color. The reef crest sits at around 15 meters, dropping to overhangs between 20 and 30 meters entirely encrusted with pink, blue, yellow, and orange soft corals, while majestic gorgonian fans add to the scene. The marine life here is equally impressive: expect to encounter napoleons, eagle rays, groupers, tunas, and large assemblies of snappers and fusiliers. On occasion, lucky divers may also spot blue-spotted stingrays gliding along the sandy bottom. Given the vastness of the site, a single dive only scratches the surface. 7th Heaven is best suited for Advanced divers, with conditions ranging from gentle to moderate currents.
