Business Class on a high-speed train in China

China’s high-speed rail system stands as the world’s largest and most advanced, but what does Business Class truly offer discerning travelers? We embarked on the Hangzhou–Shanghai route to experience it first-hand.

For luxury travelers, high-speed rail in China is not only cost-effective but also surpasses domestic air travel in reliability and convenience. Our curated one-hour journey from Hangzhou to Shanghai began with a seamless ticketing process: international guests must collect their tickets at a dedicated counter, followed by swift security screening upon station entry.

Major Chinese railway stations are vast and bustling, often overwhelming for first-time visitors. The Business Class lounge in Hangzhou was discreetly located on the ground floor, providing a tranquil escape from the crowds.

Upon entering the lounge, attentive staff greeted us and verified our journey details. The spacious lounge was thoughtfully divided into quiet zones for relaxation, dining, and productivity, catering to every traveler’s preference.

Premium amenities included high-speed Wi-Fi and abundant charging stations. The culinary selection focused on light snacks and non-alcoholic refreshments, with an emphasis on local flavors. Staff proactively informed guests when boarding commenced—typically 15 minutes prior to departure.

The state-of-the-art Fuxing high-speed train currently reaches speeds up to 350 km/h. Business Class is located at the front, where a dedicated attendant welcomes passengers and assists with seating. With only five seats in the carriage, privacy and exclusivity are assured, creating an atmosphere akin to a private jet cabin.

The plush leather seats are fully adjustable, reclining to a near-flat position ideal for rest. Blankets and pillows are available on request. Bespoke touches include an individual power outlet, reading light, expansive tray table, personal entertainment screen (currently inactive), and reliable complimentary Wi-Fi. A curated snack box featuring regional specialties such as artisanal cookies, dried tofu, and marinated duck is served alongside a selection of beverages.

The journey is remarkably swift, and personalized service continues until arrival, when staff individually remind each passenger as the train approaches Shanghai.

In our expert opinion, China’s Business Class rail experience rivals premium domestic flights, combining efficiency with refined comfort. Fares are approximately triple the cost of standard tickets—this route priced at 219 CNY (£24.50)—but the elevated experience is well worth it for those seeking exclusivity.
