American Airlines unveils its Flagship Suite – spelling the end of First Class

American Airlines has officially launched its Flagship Suite—a transformative premium cabin concept—across its new Airbus A321XLR and Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft, with the first flights now underway in 2025. Accompanying these suites, the carrier’s latest Premium Economy cabin delivers an upgraded experience for discerning travelers. The airline’s existing Boeing 777-300ER fleet is in the midst of a comprehensive refurbishment, expanding premium seating by over 45% and targeting completion by early 2026.

Historically one of the only U.S. carriers to offer international First Class—dubbed Flagship First—American Airlines is now sunsetting this cabin. The new Flagship Suite will serve as the pinnacle of its premium offering, setting a new standard for business class travelers.

On the Boeing 787-9, 51 Flagship Suites are arranged in a reverse herringbone 1-2-1 layout, ensuring every guest enjoys direct aisle access and a heightened sense of privacy. Each suite features a seat that transforms into a fully lie-flat bed, expansive personal storage, a large high-definition IFE screen, generous work and dining surfaces, and a full-height sliding privacy door. Center seats are equipped with adjustable privacy partitions, ideal for both solo and paired travelers.

Premium Economy has also been elevated, with 32 new seats incorporating enhanced privacy wings on the headrests and double the personal storage, offering a more exclusive and comfortable journey for those seeking extra space and amenities.

The narrowbody Airbus A321XLR has been outfitted with 20 Flagship Suites in a 1-1 configuration, each with direct aisle access and sliding doors for maximum seclusion. The 12-seat Premium Economy cabin is arranged 2-2, mirroring the comfort and spaciousness usually found in domestic First Class.

American Airlines is retrofitting its Boeing 777-300ER fleet to feature 70 Flagship Suites and 44 Premium Economy seats, while the Airbus A321T fleet is being updated to maintain consistency across the A321 lineup. The full rollout is expected by early 2026, promising a significant boost to premium capacity and a dramatically enhanced in-flight experience for long-haul international travelers.
