Long-anticipated upgrade in Addis Ababa

Ethiopian Airlines, Africa’s most awarded carrier, has cemented its reputation for excellence with a robust network connecting major European hubs—such as London, Frankfurt, and Vienna—to Addis Ababa and beyond. With the debut of Bole International Airport’s state-of-the-art terminal, the passenger journey is now elevated to match the airline’s premium in-flight experience.

Renowned as the gateway to East Africa, Ethiopian Airlines remains the preferred choice for discerning travelers journeying to Ethiopia and onward to destinations like Kenya, Tanzania, Zanzibar, South Africa, and the Seychelles. Regardless of your final stop, Addis Ababa’s Bole International Airport is a pivotal transfer point. Historically, the airport lagged behind the airline’s high standards. Today, the unveiling of the new terminal establishes Bole as a contender among Africa’s top international airports, offering a seamless and luxurious transit experience.

Business Class travelers and Star Alliance Gold members can now access Ethiopian Airlines’ flagship lounge—spanning over 5,000 square meters. During our recent visit, we found the lounge features private shower suites, a wellness area with massage services, and a curated array of gourmet cuisine and premium beverages. The renowned Ethiopian coffee ceremony continues to delight guests, immersing them in the birthplace of coffee with every aromatic cup.

Beyond the lounge, the terminal introduces expansive gate areas, high-speed travellators, panoramic glass elevators, and a sophisticated retail zone featuring international and local brands. Three new jet bridges and ten remote stands have been added, enabling the airport to efficiently serve over 22 million passengers annually. Departing or arriving guests benefit from reimagined check-in halls boasting 60 staffed counters and 30 self-service kiosks. Upgraded border control facilities now include 32 arrival and 16 departure passport desks, dramatically reducing wait times for international travelers.

Bole International Airport leads Africa in post-pandemic infrastructure, being the continent’s first to launch a new terminal with enhanced biosecurity. The facility is equipped with advanced thermal imaging cameras and health screening stations, providing peace of mind for travelers and setting a new benchmark for safety in the region.
