Lufthansa, SWISS and Austrian unveil their new Premium Economy Class

Premium Economy continues to redefine comfort for discerning travelers, bridging the gap between Economy and Business Class. In 2025, Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian, and Brussels Airlines have elevated their Premium Economy offering, unveiling a thoughtfully curated seat and service concept designed for today’s luxury-minded flyer.

Since Lufthansa pioneered Premium Economy in 2014, the category has matured, now featuring seats up to 19 inches wide, enhanced recline, and up to 38 inches of pitch. Modern Premium Economy includes multi-course dining, expanded entertainment screens, priority check-in, and double the checked baggage allowance compared to Economy. Austrian joined the movement in 2018, Brussels Airlines in 2019, and SWISS completed the rollout across its long-haul fleet in 2022, ensuring the entire Lufthansa Group now offers a consistent, elevated experience.

The evolution of Premium Economy is unmistakable: seats today rival the Business Class of the late 1990s in comfort and technology, but with a contemporary, understated elegance. However, product differentiation remains a challenge across the industry, as many airlines—Lufthansa included—source similar seat designs, opting for bespoke finishes and amenities to create brand distinction. For instance, Lufthansa’s inaugural Premium Economy seat was nearly identical to Singapore Airlines’ offering, with the latter opting for premium leather accents.

The latest Premium Economy seat from Lufthansa Group represents a significant leap forward in privacy and ergonomic design. The innovative fixed-shell structure and enveloping headrest wings offer a cocoon-like sanctuary, minimizing disturbance from neighboring passengers and ambient noise.

Unlike traditional reclining seats, these new seats slide forward within a fixed shell, preserving personal space for those seated behind. This design, familiar to frequent flyers on Air France or Aeroflot, prioritizes privacy and comfort. However, taller guests may find the cradle recline less accommodating; during our test flights, we found lumbar support notably improved, addressing a common pain point from earlier models.

Technological enhancements are front and center. Each seat now features a crystal-clear 15.6-inch 4K entertainment screen, USB-C fast charging, and wireless charging pads for mobile devices. Additional luxuries include individual reading lamps, a dedicated cocktail table, and a secure space for high-fidelity noise-cancelling headphones—now standard across the fleet.

SWISS was first to debut the refreshed Premium Economy across its Boeing 777-300ER and Airbus A340-300 aircraft, with the A330-300 fleet following soon after. The rollout across the Lufthansa Group’s flagship aircraft—including the Boeing 747-8, 787-9 Dreamliner, A350-900, and the highly anticipated Boeing 777-9—ensures passengers can enjoy this upgraded experience on all major long-haul routes by 2025.
