Lufthansa upgrades its Business Class product & orders new aircraft

Lufthansa has elevated its premium travel experience by securing 32 additional Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, 26 more Airbus A350-900s, and 20 Boeing 777-9s—long-awaited jets now slated to join the fleet in 2025. While these aircraft orders are for the entire Lufthansa Group, including SWISS and Austrian Airlines, the final allocation across the group remains undisclosed.

This acquisition includes a unique subset: five nearly-new 787-9 Dreamliners initially destined for Hainan Airlines, as well as four A350-900s previously with Philippine Airlines, acquired during their financial restructuring. Lufthansa, Germany’s flagship carrier, is rolling out its latest Business Class design on all new A350 and 787 deliveries, offering direct aisle access and a suite-like environment for every passenger.

The airline welcomed its first of these 787-9 Dreamliners, christened “Berlin,” at the close of August 2022. Today, discerning Business Class travelers may encounter a variety of seat types depending on their aircraft—ushering in a new era of both choice and anticipation.

Historically, Lufthansa’s Business Class featured a uniform V-shaped 2-2-2 seating layout across its long-haul fleet. However, the integration of ex-Philippine Airlines A350s with Thompson Vantage XL seats and ex-Hainan Airlines 787s with Safran Cirrus reverse herringbone seats introduces a diversity of premium seating. This marks a major departure from Lufthansa’s established product consistency.

Lufthansa is maintaining the high-quality seating found on these acquired aircraft, which represent a marked upgrade from its legacy product. Prior to international deployment, each aircraft undergoes a comprehensive refurbishment at Lufthansa Technik in Frankfurt and is introduced on short-haul routes for crew familiarization. Toronto continues to be among the first long-haul destinations for these enhanced cabins. The long-anticipated new Business Class—originally unveiled in 2017—has now begun rolling out on factory-fresh A350s and 787s since 2023, with further expansion in 2025.

Travelers now enjoy cutting-edge lie-flat beds, increased privacy, and direct aisle access in Business Class. While product uniformity has given way to a more varied experience, Lufthansa ensures that seat assignments and aircraft types are clearly communicated at booking, upholding the brand’s commitment to service excellence and transparency.
