Review of Etihad Airways First Class

Etihad Airways First Class remains a benchmark for luxury air travel, renowned for its bespoke service, gourmet cuisine, and exceptional comfort. In 2025, Etihad continues refining its premium offerings, strategically focusing on key international routes to maximize exclusivity for discerning travelers. With a streamlined yet versatile fleet, the airline maintains exceptional consistency while retaining the flexibility to adapt to evolving passenger preferences.

Etihad’s flagship First Class cabins are available on select Airbus A380, Boeing 787-9, and 777-300ER aircraft. The A380’s iconic 'The Residence' and 'First Apartments' offer a standard of privacy and indulgence that remains unparalleled in commercial aviation, while the 787-9 and 777-300ER feature refined suites with a strong emphasis on personal service and understated elegance.

While Etihad is not part of a major global alliance, it has cultivated robust bilateral partnerships with carriers such as Air New Zealand, Air Canada, Air Serbia, and Malaysia Airlines. These collaborations allow Etihad Guest members to accrue and redeem points across a wide network—particularly beneficial for frequent flyers based in or transiting through Abu Dhabi, the airline’s cosmopolitan hub.

Airport experience

For those embarking from Abu Dhabi, Etihad First Class guests enjoy a seamless journey from the moment they leave home. The exclusive chauffeur service—now reserved for First Class and select Business Class travelers—ensures a stylish arrival at the airport. Upon entry, guests are greeted by porters and guided to private check-in counters, followed by expedited security channels leading directly to the lounge.

The Etihad First Class Lounge in Terminal 3 continues to impress with its sophisticated Arabian-inspired interiors, curated à la carte and buffet dining, and a signature bar serving bespoke cocktails and premium vintages. The lounge also features a spa with complimentary wellness treatments, a modern fitness suite, tranquil workspaces, a cinema room, cigar lounge, and family-friendly amenities including private showers and baby facilities. For travelers departing from Terminal 1, First Class access is provided via an exclusive enclave within the Business Class lounge.

Etihad's highly anticipated Midfield Terminal at Abu Dhabi International Airport is now operational, unveiling next-generation lounge facilities with enhanced privacy, wellness, and dining options. While walking distances between terminals have been reduced, only one dedicated First Class lounge is currently available for all premium passengers.

When flying from global destinations, First Class travelers receive access to partner airline lounges or Etihad-branded spaces at select airports, including London Heathrow and Washington Dulles.

Upon arrival in Abu Dhabi, First Class guests can unwind in the Arrivals Lounge—shared with Business Class—where amenities include a full-service concierge, refreshments, showers, relaxation spaces, and high-speed Wi-Fi.

Abu Dhabi airport remains unique among Gulf hubs, offering U.S. Customs and Border Protection pre-clearance for all U.S.-bound flights. This allows travelers to complete immigration checks before departure, ensuring a swift domestic-style arrival stateside. Passengers are advised to allocate additional time for these formalities; a dedicated lounge for U.S.-bound premium travelers is available after pre-clearance.

Cabin & Seat

The pinnacle of in-flight luxury is epitomized by 'The Residence' aboard Etihad’s A380—a three-room private suite featuring a spacious living area, a separate double bedroom, a dedicated shower, and round-the-clock butler and chef service. With only one Residence per aircraft, this is a truly singular travel experience, now available exclusively on select flagship routes.

First Class passengers on the A380 enjoy the privacy of nine 'First Apartments,' each designed as an individual sanctuary with a leather recliner, a separate ottoman that transforms into a bed, a swiveling high-definition entertainment screen, and a personal refreshment bar. For couples, adjoining Apartments can be combined for a double suite, offering unmatched intimacy in the skies.

On the Boeing 787-9 and 777-300ER, First Class suites are arranged in a 1-2-1 configuration, each with sliding doors for enhanced privacy. Pairs traveling together should select the center suites, which feature adjustable dividers, while solo travelers will appreciate the window-side suites. These aircraft are gradually being phased out, so availability is limited to select routes.

The seat transforms effortlessly into a fully flat bed, complete with a plush mattress topper, luxurious duvet, and an oversized pillow. Crew members offer a personalized turndown service on request, ensuring restful sleep at altitude.

Clever storage spaces abound, with compartments for personal electronics, reading materials, and valuables. Each seat offers convenient access to power outlets and USB ports, as well as a dedicated wardrobe for hanging garments.

On the 787-9, seat orientation alternates by row for optimal privacy—first-row windows face rearward, while second-row windows face forward. Center suites alternate accordingly. Full-height privacy panels and sliding doors create an intimate, cocoon-like environment. Guests are encouraged to pre-select their preferred seat, with no extra charge for advance assignment.

Oversized, sturdy tray tables glide out for dining or work and offer generous surface area. On the 787-9, electrochromatic window dimmers provide customizable lighting without the need for manual shades, a modern touch appreciated during our flight.

The ottoman doubles as a companion seat, complete with its own seatbelt, so guests can dine together. Additional storage is cleverly integrated beneath the ottoman, compensating for the absence of overhead bins, which opens up the cabin for a more spacious feel. Cabin crew are happy to store larger carry-ons in a dedicated wardrobe if needed.

A signature feature is the in-suite minibar, stocked with premium soft drinks and bottled water for on-demand refreshment.

Cuisine

Etihad’s First Class culinary program delivers a restaurant-quality, dine-anytime experience. Guests can order from an extensive à la carte menu at their leisure, with each dish prepared to order and presented with meticulous attention to detail. While the dedicated onboard chef role has been retired, the highly trained crew delivers refined plating and attentive service throughout the meal.

Dining tables are elegantly set with crisp linens, fine china, and premium cutlery. Service begins with a welcome drink and a selection of gourmet canapés, such as spiced nuts and Middle Eastern mezze.

The menu is crafted around fresh, seasonal ingredients, offering a choice of regional and international starters. The signature Arabic mezze remains a highlight for those seeking authentic flavors. Between courses, palate-cleansing sorbets are served to enhance the gastronomic journey.

Main courses range from expertly grilled meats and seafood to vegetarian and Gulf-inspired specialties, such as saffron-infused biryani. Guests can customize their meal with a variety of accompaniments and sauces, including French fries, roasted vegetables, and chef’s signature reductions. The grill-to-order option allows for further personalization, but popular dishes may run low, so early selection is advised.

Desserts are decadent and beautifully presented, featuring patisserie, artisan ice creams, and curated cheese boards. The experience concludes with gourmet coffee, premium teas, liqueurs, and a selection of handmade chocolates.

Between main meals, an all-day snack menu offers lighter fare—think gourmet sliders, salads, and regional sweets. Rotating chef’s specials keep the menu fresh for frequent flyers. Hot towels and a box of chocolates mark the end of the meal service.

Breakfast is always available on request, with a range of bakery items, fresh fruit, made-to-order eggs, and smoothies—ideal for adapting to different time zones and minimizing jet lag.

Beverages

Upon boarding, First Class guests are welcomed by name and presented with their preferred beverage—typically a choice of vintage Champagne, such as Charles Heidsieck Brut or Rosé, served on a silver tray with warm towels and traditional dates. The service continues with Arabic coffee delivered to each suite for an authentic regional touch.

The comprehensive beverage menu features a boutique wine list, generally including two Champagnes, a curated selection of white and red wines, and a dessert wine. The cocktail program highlights both classic and signature creations, complemented by an impressive spirits collection, artisanal mocktails, and a wide array of premium soft drinks and juices. International beers are also available, and coffee aficionados can select from espresso, cappuccino, or macchiato, all brewed to order. Crew members are skilled in wine pairing and are happy to recommend options to match your meal. The Cognac trolley, with XO and vintage selections, marks a memorable end to the dining service.

Service

Service in Etihad First Class is consistently polished, with an international team trained to anticipate guest needs and deliver thoughtful, proactive hospitality. During our journeys, we noted that crew members consistently addressed guests by name, remembered individual preferences, and attended to even subtle details, creating a sense of effortless luxury and genuine warmth.

Entertainment

Etihad’s E-BOX entertainment system offers an expansive library of international films, including new releases from Hollywood, Europe, and the Middle East, as well as documentaries, short features, and children’s programming. The intuitive touchscreen interface and remote control make browsing effortless, while immersive noise-cancelling headphones ensure crystal-clear audio. Gamers and podcast enthusiasts will also find a variety of options to pass the time, and the interactive 3D map provides real-time flight tracking.

Wi-Fi connectivity is available across the First Class fleet, with complimentary data vouchers for premium guests—though data limits apply. Additional packages can be purchased for streaming or extended browsing.
