Virgin Australia stands as the nation’s second-largest carrier, trailing only Qantas. Originally founded as Virgin Blue in 2000 with a budget focus, the airline has since matured into a full-service operation, now providing Business Class seating across its entire network.
Prior to 2020, Virgin Australia boasted an expansive mix of domestic and international routes from major hubs like Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney. The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, combined with financial turbulence, led to a period of administration and subsequent acquisition by a US-based investment group. Under revitalized leadership and a strategic overhaul, the airline has sharpened its focus on “value-driven corporate, business, and premium leisure travelers.”
Headquartered in Brisbane, Virgin Australia’s current fleet is exclusively comprised of Boeing 737 aircraft. The reliable 737-800 remains the fleet’s backbone, with the advanced 737 MAX 8 and MAX 10 aircraft now joining and enhancing the fleet as of 2025. The airline serves 33 domestic airports and maintains select international routes to Queenstown, Denpasar, Nadi, and the Cocos/Keeling Islands.
Despite new management, Virgin Australia retains its signature branding and remains a proud member of the global Virgin family. Aircraft feature the iconic livery reminiscent of Virgin Atlantic, a nod to the broader Virgin Group founded by Sir Richard Branson—whose ventures now include over 300 brands worldwide, including the trailblazing Virgin Galactic.
The Velocity Frequent Flyer program is Virgin Australia’s loyalty scheme, offering four membership tiers—Red, Silver, Gold, and Platinum. Membership is free, with points earned and redeemed via flights, partner credit cards, car rentals, and hotel stays.
Virgin Australia partners with a diverse portfolio of international airlines through codeshare agreements, including Air Canada, ANA, Beijing Capital Airlines, Etihad Airways, Hainan Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, Hong Kong Airlines, Singapore Airlines, South African Airways, Tianjin Airlines, United Airlines, Qatar Airways, and Virgin Atlantic.
Airport experience
Virgin Australia’s domestic lounges are located in key airports including Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Gold Coast, Melbourne (T3), Perth (T1), and Sydney (T2). A highlight of every lounge is the expertly crafted barista coffee—a beloved staple among Australian travelers.
Lounges offer ample buffet selections for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, complemented by a midday-onwards bar service featuring curated regional wines and boutique beers. While some amenities such as showers and business centers may vary depending on location and operational updates, high-speed complimentary Wi-Fi is consistently provided and supports seamless streaming.
On Thursday and Friday evenings, guests in Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane are treated to exclusive culinary collaborations, such as gourmet offerings from Betty’s Burgers, including the signature Truffle Cheeseburger and Popcorn Chicken.
Both Sydney and Melbourne lounges feature Premium Entry—a discreet, fast-track entrance with private check-in desks (for carry-on only) and a dedicated security lane leading directly to the lounge. Melbourne’s lounge also boasts a Premium Exit that delivers guests straight to the departure gates after security screening.
For elite travelers, the Beyond lounges in Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney provide an invitation-only sanctuary. Accessible via a hidden entrance with a digital membership card, these spaces are tailored for top-tier Velocity members, business partners, and VIPs. Expect oak-paneled interiors, plush leather seating, privacy pods, and an à la carte dining menu, all in a serene, exclusive environment.
All airports offer dedicated premium check-in counters and priority boarding for Business Class guests.

Cabin & Seat
Virgin Australia’s aircraft are easily recognized by their pristine white exteriors and the iconic Virgin logo—originally created by calligrapher Ray Kyte—gracing each tailfin. A distinctive ‘Flying Maiden’ emblem, now styled with timeless elegance, adorns the nose of every jet, symbolizing the brand’s enduring spirit. The airline’s fleet also carries evocative names inspired by Australia’s renowned beaches and waterways, such as ‘Binalong Bay’.
All Virgin Australia flights feature a dedicated Business Class cabin at the front, offering eight leather recliners in a 2-2 layout. Seats provide generous proportions: 19.5 inches (49.5 cm) wide, 37-inch (94 cm) pitch, and a 5-inch (12.7 cm) recline. Adjustable headrests, expansive tray tables, and convenient drink shelves enhance the passenger experience. Select aircraft offer AC outlets, while mood lighting is standard across most cabins, creating a contemporary and inviting ambiance.
The latest Boeing 737 MAX 8 and MAX 10 aircraft, now flying in 2025, showcase the airline’s upgraded Business Class seat. This new model—currently being phased in—features extended leg rests, increased recline, individual AC and USB charging, and will soon introduce integrated tablet holders. These enhancements elevate comfort on both short and medium-haul routes.
The Businessclass flight search showcases seat maps, images, and comprehensive cabin details for all major airlines, allowing travelers to preview seat dimensions and layouts before booking.

Cuisine
Business Class guests can anticipate thoughtfully prepared meals, presented on a single tray with a linen napkin and elegant cutlery. While the service is streamlined rather than multi-course, the quality of the cuisine is consistently high, especially on longer journeys.
Depending on the time of day and flight length, two main course options are available—typically one served hot and the other chilled. The menu is rotated every two months and highlights premium Australian produce. Breakfast is available on departures from 3am to 10am, lunch is served between 10am and 4pm, and dinner is offered after 4pm.
Noteworthy breakfast selections include Greek yoghurt with passionfruit coulis, croissants with smoked salmon and capers, or zucchini fritters paired with goat cheese and roasted tomato. For lunch and dinner, expect dishes such as antipasto platters with smoked salmon, chicken tagine with jeweled rice, or cheese tortellini in basil-pumpkin cream. The lamb and rosemary pie, complemented by creamy mashed potatoes, remains a perennial favorite among frequent flyers.
Currently, Virgin Australia does not facilitate advance meal selection in Business Class. With only eight seats, menu choices can be limited—opting for the front row increases your chances of securing your preferred dish. Special dietary meals are not offered at this time.
For those seeking a lighter bite or additional snack, a variety of biscuits, nuts, and soy mixes are available from the self-serve pantry throughout the flight.

Beverages
Business Class travelers are greeted with a complimentary pre-flight drink—your choice of sparkling wine, juice, or still water.
The inflight beverage menu features a curated range of Australian wines (for example, Grant Burge NV Sparkling), a selection of craft beers such as Green Beacon Tropical Pale, and an array of premium spirits including Gordons Gin, Jim Beam White Label Bourbon, Bundaberg Rum, Johnnie Walker Red Label, and Smirnoff Vodka. A full suite of premium teas, espresso coffee, juices, and sparkling water is also available. Please note, hot beverages are not served on the shortest domestic hops.
Champagne is not currently available in Business Class on Virgin Australia flights.

Service
Our experience with Virgin Australia’s Business Class crew consistently reflects professionalism, warmth, and genuine attentiveness. Staff regularly check in with guests throughout the flight, ensuring every need is met with a personal touch.
Their distinctive uniforms—designed by Project Runway Australia winner Julie Grbac—feature vibrant red ensembles for women, complete with color-coded silk scarves, and sleek dark suits with coordinated ties for men. The airline remains committed to sustainability, donating retired uniforms to charitable organizations such as Dress for Success and Dress for Work.
Business Class travelers benefit from thoughtful touches, including coat-hanging services and individual hooks at each seat for added convenience.

Entertainment
Virgin Australia does not provide personal seatback screens in any cabin. Instead, passengers can access the ‘Entertain’ app, which offers a robust library of films, TV shows, podcasts, e-books, and music. We recommend downloading the app and bringing your own headphones before departure, as seats do not yet feature integrated tablet holders—though this is expected to arrive with the new Business Class seat.
Although Virgin Australia aircraft are equipped with Wi-Fi technology, inflight internet access is not currently available. Passengers are encouraged to download content in advance for uninterrupted entertainment.
The Businessclass flight search details the latest inflight entertainment and Wi-Fi offerings for each airline and route.
Amenities & Facilities
Given Virgin Australia’s exclusive focus on short and medium-haul flights, Business Class amenities are minimal. While amenity kits are not provided, plush blankets and supportive pillows are available on the longest journeys to enhance your comfort.
Short & Medium Haul
Virgin Australia primarily operates short-haul flights, with its longest sector being the six-hour journey from Sydney to Denpasar, Bali.
Most domestic passengers now enjoy real-time baggage tracking via the Virgin Australia app—a feature fully rolled out after a successful pilot program in 2023. This tool covers key routes between major cities, including Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Hobart, Adelaide, and Sunshine Coast.
Once you download the app and enable notifications, you’ll receive continuous updates on your checked luggage’s status, including check-in, transfers on international partner flights, and carousel details upon arrival.
This innovation is designed to offer peace of mind and encourage more guests to travel with checked bags.

Sustainability
Virgin Australia has long been at the forefront of sustainable aviation, launching the world’s first government-certified carbon offset program in 2007. Passengers can opt to offset their flight’s emissions during booking, supporting environmental initiatives such as the Tasmanian Land Conservancy (TLC), which protects over 30,000 hectares of critical habitats for species like the Tasmanian devil and wedge-tailed eagle.
In 2025, the airline continues to invest in the latest fuel-efficient aircraft. The newly delivered Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft have reduced carbon emissions by 15% per trip, while the Boeing 737 MAX 10s—now in service—deliver up to 17% lower emissions compared to older models.
The Businessclass flight search highlights the environmental impact and CO2 scores for each flight, favoring airlines with the most advanced and eco-friendly fleets.
